  • Researchers at Alfaisal University, led by Professor Ahmad Aljada, developed a rapid and highly sensitive COVID-19 PCR test that can detect the virus in just 30 minutes without requiring RNA isolation. The test is portable and could be used for large gatherings, such as Hajj, with potential for diagnosing other infectious diseases.   • CIPC (Center for Innovation, Partnership, and Community Engagement) was established to bridge the gap between the rapidly evolving trends in the healthcare system, academia, and community needs. Saudi Arabia proved to be among the rapidly growing countries in multidimensional spheres including economy, technology, and healthcare. CIPC aims to harness from this booming environment to yield effective collaborations for the university itself and research opportunities for its students whilst centralizing education and community engagement.   • Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine community is a hub of international collaboration dedicated to advancing family medicine globally. Dr. Baraa AlGhalyini is an assistant professor & Chair of the Family & Community Medicine Department as well as the Vice Dean of the College of Medicine at Alfaisal Univeriity. She is also a long-standing partner, a member of the Besrour Centre’s Advisory Council, and a co-lead on the FM Pivot Module. In 2016 she became the first University of Toronto alumni representative in Riyadh and is the first appointed Saudi adjunct faculty at the Department of Family and Community Medicine in Toronto (2006 to the present) where she continues to participate actively in the academic fellowship and Global Health Programs. Dr.AlGhalyini has been awarded Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP) and has contributed immensely to the field of family medicine teaching, continuous professional development, and research.   • The Journey to 5K Marathon was organized at Alfasial by the Family and Community Medicine Department in a unique first of its kind initiative aimed to fostering a healthy campus atmosphere. The marathon encouraged active participation among students, staff, faculty and alumni. The marathon was preceeded by a weekly "Sunday Alfaisal Run" in collaboration with a local organization called We Run, who provide a running crew and expert coaches to help Alfaisal community strength train and prepare.   • The Digital Health Conference (DHCon) is a global conference that brings key leaders, scientists, health care professionals, and stakeholders in digital health to one place where they explore, showcase, and network for Healthcare Artificial Intelligence innovation and advancement. The conference is powered by the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH&RC), the leading hospital in the MENA region for healthcare delivery and research.   • Alfaisal Mini Med School Series (AMMSS) is a student-led, faculty-supervised, initiative that aims to enhance the students’ community engagement by raising the public awareness towards important and trendy healthcare related topics. With the supervision of Dr. Baraa Alghalyini, chair of Family and Community Medicine Department and course director of Family Medicine courses, year 3 students work collaboratively to organize a one-hour session with a topic-expert guest speaker targeting the general public to raise awareness on critical and hot topics such as, chronic pain management, Sleep Medicine, Mental Health, care of the elderly, and preconception counseling.   • COVID19 3D Printing Hackathon competition was created in collaboration with King Faisal Specialists Hospital, to create innovative safety equipment using 3D printing techniques to help minimize, or eliminate the spread of COVID19.   • Alfaisal University Hosts CoCreate Fellowship Program Projects Exhibition of 2020 Humanistic Co-Design Initiative (HCDI) launched CoCreate Saudi Arabia with a 3-day workshop event that advocated for the application of the Humanistic Co-Design Process to develop assistive technologies that value the lived experience of the local community. Designed as a one-year interdisciplinary innovation fellowship program, CoCreate brought together a group of scientists and engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with local innovators to collaboratively develop new assistive technologies alongside local people with disabilities.   • The accelerated innovation event aimed to gather VR expertise and advice on building VR head-mounted displays for children to address the limitation of commercial VR headsets in the consumer market which are often designed for target audiences with demographics of 12+ years of age. It has been established that the earlier a child with dyslexia is diagnosed, the more effective educational interventions are likely to be. Therefore, the team sought to design and develop tools that are age-appropriate for this applied context. Eng. Aram Monawar reflected on the MakeAthon’s framework by stating, “The VR MakeAthon proved to be a rich environment where learning and discussion could be had across all disciplines. Alfaisal’s Software, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering faculty came together with Speech and Language Pathologists, Industrial Product Designers, Biomedical Engineers, and High School Students to brainstorm, research, and implement design considerations and ideas.” Know More.

This event provided a great opportunity for alumni to reunite, reminisce about their university experiences, and form new connections in a pleasant atmosphere.   7. Let's Talk Community WORKshoPotluck was a workshop held at Alfaisal University under the CIPC. The workshop aimed to provide an opportunity for the participants to engage in community-building activities, exchange ideas, and collaborate to develop new community engagement projects. The event was aimed at promoting community engagement among the university's faculty and staff, and it achieved its objective. The workshop included brainstorming sessions where participants were grouped into five different tables to come up with innovative community engagement projects.
